| Licensed Joined: Dec 2009 From: Lake Stevens, WA I Ride: Buell Ulysses, TTR-250, BMW F650, CBR954RR | I recently did some welding on a cast aluminum transmission and it wasn't easy. To do it right, you will need to pull the engine, as it takes a ton of preheat to get a decent weld and the case functions as a heat sink. Oil and other contaminants really screw the whole procedure up. You may be able to braze it via something like alumiweld/durafix but they also require about 750 degrees and MAP gas or acetylene to get the desired temperature with the heat sink issues. Lastly, the JB weld mentioned here is the only way I can see to do it without heat or puling the issues. If you don't have a good bond, you might bevel the area to ensure proper relief and bonding. Keep in mind, epoxy, welding or brazing might need to have the area milled or fly cut to ensure proper fitment after the procedure. My 2 cents. |
