Tips on Using Mig Welders from Eastwood Auto Restoration Experts ...

Pottstown, PA (Vocus) October 8, 2010

The Eastwood Company, do-it-yourself innovators of automotive restoration tools, have a number of tips for using Eastwood’s industrial quality line of MIG welders, available at do-it-yourself prices. MIG welding is the process of using electricity to melt and join pieces of metal together.

Mig welders allow the DIY enthusiast to work on a wide variety of restoration projects including working with thin gauge body sheet metal for patch panels, or heavier fabrication of steel frame brackets and motor mounts, among other project tasks. MIG welding can be used to weld many different types of metals: carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, magnesium, copper, nickel, silicon bronze and other alloys.

In getting ready to use a mig welder, it’s important to have the proper gear. Start with getting an Auto Darkening Welding Helmet and welding gloves with extended cuffs to shield the wrist, along with a long sleeve jacket.

Before welding, Eastwood recommends consulting the guide on the inside welder cover for setting recommendations. The “Quick Set” weld chart specifies welding amperage and wire speed settings for each material thickness. Eastwood recommends that the settings be fine tuned by testing on some scrap piece that is the same material as the piece being welded. Also, welding should be done in an open area, such as your driveway.

“We developed these units with high quality transformers that allow the enthusiast to get the same penetration and weld quality utilizing household current,” commented Robidoux. “The Eastwood MIG welders are equivalent in performance to industrial brands insuring professional results at a cost that is two to three times less than industrial welders.” They are designed with a smooth wire feed motor, a gentle trigger control, and infinitely adjustable wire speed and voltage.

The Eastwood Mig Welder line includes a 110 Volt input 135 Amp Mig Welder and a more robust 220 Volt input 175 Amp MIG Welder. Each unit comes with a Tweco ™ style gun, ground cable assembly, gas flow regulator and hose, hand held shield, wire brush and a 2lb spool of .0023″ Mig Wire. The Eastwood 135 Amp Mig Welder is equipped with a temperature controller, as well as an overload breaker that protects the welder if it exceeds the maximum output. The Eastwood 175 Amp Mig Welder is equipped with a spool gun, making aluminum plate welding possible. The only thing needed is to rent a bottle of 75% Argon/25% CO2.

These units have been tested against leading U.S. brands and are of comparable quality in both weld penetration, smooth wire feed and arc stability. This Eastwood product has a 3 year Manufacturer’s Warranty, backed by Eastwood’s “No Hassle” Return Policy.
