Welder's spark touches off fire in Lenore, Man. - Winnipeg Free Press

A spark from a welder started a grass fire that claimed two abandoned houses and a trailer in the small Manitoba town of Lenore Thursday afternoon. It also prompted RCMP and firefighters to evacuate the town.

A spark from a welder started a grass fire that claimed two abandoned houses and a trailer in the small Manitoba town of Lenore Thursday afternoon.

It also prompted RCMP and firefighters to evacuate the town.

The fire started at about 2:45 pm. Firefighters from all over the area were dispatched to battle the blaze, which eventually moved into the outskirts of Lenore, located about 30 km northeast of Virden.

The fire destroyed two abandoned homes and a trailer and damaged another house.

The fire is now under control, but smoke blanketed the area for much of the afternoon.

There were no injuries.
