Forget the beach. Forget lounging in front of the TV. Eighth-graders at Patti Welder Middle School have a better plan for spring break: studying for the STAAR test.

In preparing for the first year of the state's new assessment, a group of teachers at Patti Welder came up with the idea of offering tutoring for eighth-graders, who will take the math, science, reading and social studies STAAR tests beginning March 27.

"All of their teachers have been talking so much about the STAAR being more rigorous, and I think that teachers and students both are anxious about it," said Caleigh Etheredge, 24.

Etheredge, who works with students on core subjects as the eighth-grade inclusion teacher, is in her third year of teaching. She said the tutoring sessions should help kids approach the STAAR test with more confidence.

"They want to know more. They want to feel prepared, especially going into high school," Etheredge said.

Monday through Thursday, students will break into groups and study each subject for about an hour in the mornings. That leaves Friday for students to brush up on the concepts with which they're most struggling.

Students are already studying STAAR sample questions released by the Texas Education Agency, and the district's CSCOPE curriculum is helping educators hone in on the objectives students need the more help understanding.

Etheredge said she and other teachers have been surprised by the reaction from students who want to spend their spring breaks learning even more.

"The teachers and the students are excited about this," she said. "We hoped they would want to come, but we've got a really good response from the kids. It's going to be a really good opportunity."
